Andrew is the vice chairman of the Craft Guild of Chefs.
TH: What are the benefits to companies entering industry awards?
AG: The benefits are to both the company and to the individual, it shows real passion and commitment for what they are trying to achieve. Whether it be for a Chef trying to outwit another Chef, or a company such as Sodexo entering a CR category at one of the large awards.
TH: Which awards are you personally involved in both in regard to your role at the Craft Guild of Chefs and Sodexo?
AG: I have this year judged the Craft Guild of Chefs awards that were recently held at The Hilton Park Lane, and what a great event that was!! The British Frozen Foods Awards, London Chef of the Year, and latter in the year I am representing the Craft Guild in judging the South East Asian Chef Competition national final. As for Sodexo I am not really involved with any awards at present, although I always wear my Sodexo logoed Chef jacket, and ensure that I am flying the flag!! The most important thing when judging is to ensure that you keep a professional approach at all times.
TH: If you could give one piece of advice for companies/persons entering awards what would it be?
AG: Make sure that you read the criteria, and more than once!
TH: What is the most common mistake you see in award entries?
AG: It is where people do not read the criteria, and then when they enter wonder why they have not been better placed.
TH: What award entry have you received that has stood out the most for you, and why?
AG: There have been so many for different reasons, but from a chefs point of view the entries that have had real thought behind them in regards to flavours, textures and appearance. When it has been for awards like the British Frozen Foods Awards, the panel of judges look at a range of other items as well, for example packaging.
TH: How long have you been involved in the CGoC for now?
AG: Wow, I started way back in 1981, and I joined the committee in 1994.
TH: If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
AG: To make the world a better and fairer place for all.
TH: If you had 10 minutes on prime time TV what would be your subject matter?
AG: I guess it would have to be on food and drink, the only things I know about, and it would be based around healthy eating and the need to ensure that children of today have a good well balanced diet.
TH: Tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t know?
AG: Well if I told you, then you would know, then I would have nothing to tell anyone if they asked me the question again!! Well ok then… I’m not that keen on heights, and this for someone who has glided to the ground on many occasions with parachute on back, there you know now!!
