TH: Who would be guests at your perfect dinner party? (dead or alive)
JW: Oscar Wilde, Barack Obama, Nigel Pearson (Leicester City manager), Jo Brand, Penelope Cruz, and JK Rowling (my partner shares the same surname and it would be great to find we had a super-rich relative.
TH: What is your favourite meal?
JW: There’s no way I could narrow it down to a single meal. As a vegetarian I had a succession of brilliant meals on holiday in Kerela, southern India.
TH: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
JW: I would turn all Humvees registered in Britain into Noddy cars and force the owners to continue driving them.
TH: If you weren’t a journalist, what would you be doing?
JW: I can’t imagine doing anything else, but I’m sure I’d do a far better job as chief executive of a major bank than any of the current incumbents.
TH: What do you admire most about the wholesale sector?
JW: Most of the companies in the sector are family owned and the sheer energy and entrepreneurial skill of the people running them is brilliant.
TH: What is your big prediction for the wholesale sector in 2009?
JW: It will fare much better during the recession than many outside the sector, and some inside, I expect.
TH: How well equipped overall are wholesalers to cope with the current economic climate?
JW: Very well equipped. Apart from the qualities mentioned above they are selling necessities of life. People may go without new cars but they will still buy food and drink. Cash-strapped consumers are buying little and often from the local shops supplied by wholesalers, and giving themselves extra treats like a bar of chocolate or bottle of wine to lift the gloom.
TH: What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a business looking to start dealing with a wholesaler?
JW: Two things. Wholesale is very different to retail so make sure you do your homework and understand their requirements. And read ProWholesaler.
TH: Tell us something we probably didn’t know about you?
JW: I was a great soprano, doing solos in concerts at Primary School. Then my voice broke and I haven’t been able to hit a note since.
